Diwali

Diwali is an Indian festival also known as the Festival of Lights. People in India and Nepal celebrate it at the end of the Hindu calendar year which usually falls in October or November.

Diwali is a national holiday in India and Nepal and celebration can last for five days. The fourth day of Diwali marks the start of the New Year and is considered the most important day of the festival.

Diwali is a time for lighting lamps and dias; and for praying for good health, peace and wisdom. It is a happy time when children may light fireworks; adults buy new clothes and give gifts and sweets to family and friends.

During Diwali devotees pray to Mother Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth, for prosperity, good health and happiness in the coming year.

Here are two tasks you may want to try.

First task:

What festivals do you celebrate? Write some sentences about your favourite festival.

Second task:

You can work with a partner for this task. Ask your partner the questions below and write down their answers.

  1. What is your favourite festival?
  2. When do you celebrate it?
  3. How do you celebrate it? What special things do you do?

S.A.D.

It is winter in Canada!
What kinds of winter sports do you play?
Skiing, skating, hockey?

It is a good idea to get out and do some sports.
Did you know that 'get out' is a phrasal verb?

skiing, skating, playing.... these are all gerunds - this is a noun that looks like a verb

Try this sentence:

I like to go shopping.  Which word is the gerund?

Many people don't go out much in the winter and because of the lack of sunshine they get:
S.A.D.
This is an acronym for what?
type in S.A.D. into the Google search bar and see what comes up......

(to come up is also a phrasal verb)

Don't forget..... come to class, ask a teacher and learn some more.
For information call:  416-201-1653
Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings!
